FAMILIES ARE TREES – Josiah Diaso

I was travelling recently to Ondo state with my colleagues for a function and I was enthralled as always with the beautiful greenery that lace our landscape in the southern regions of Nigeria. I was once again reminded of the beauty of nature and the resplendence of trees. Trees are the very essence of our existence, they are the very reason why we can thrive as humans.

By their very nature, trees are support systems…

I have had course to visit the Northern part of Nigeria for different reasons, and the striking contrast of their environment from that in the southern part of the country is evident. The rather barren landscape and relative unavailability of greenery makes for a climate that pushes the inhabitants of those regions to the brink of survival in most instances. The “mere” absence of trees in any environment is almost a death sentence to all life forms in such environment. Trees are indeed a support system. For those of us who grew up in the lush vegetation of the Delta and we played as children do by climbing trees, hence having a close relationship with trees, we understand and value the support system that trees provide. Trees provide food, shelter, fresh air, and overall support.

By their very nature and essence, a family is like a tree that should provide the necessary backing for members thereof. The availability of Food, shelter, support (emotional and physical) and friendship are what actually defines families besides blood relationship. Some may even argue that blood relationship is the least consideration in the practical definition of what a family is. When the only relationship that exists in a group is blood, family is lacking. Think again of trees and super-impose it with the concept of family and you would appreciate more what should avail.

Families are building blocks of society. A decadent society is a reflection of the quality and functionality of families that exist in that society. It is time to re-direct our focus on the family unit and provide the right kind of leadership needed to make it play its function. As parents, the onus lies on us; we are responsible for how society turns out. Children must be taught at an early age correct values, they must be taught to value work and partnership. They must be taught honesty and openness. They must be taught entrepreneurship and savings. They must be conditioned to respect people and things. They must be provided for, they must be loved and cared for. They must be listened to and heard. They must feel valued and important. More importantly they must see you practice what you preach.

Nothing is more relieving than relaxing under the shade of a tree on a hot sunny day after walking long hours in the sun; it feels almost like a hug from nature as the cool breeze caresses and sooths the skin. Welcome home it seems to say, like the voice of a parent when a child returns from a long and arduous journey.

Families are trees…

#LETS TALK – DEPRESSION – Uduak ukpe

depressionSadness, feeling down, having a loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities - these are symptoms familiar to all of us. But, if they persist and affect our life substantially, it may be depression.

Recently, not just in Nigeria but around the world there has been an increase in the number of suicide cases according to statistics. The current trend in the nation’s economy where all we hear is recession day in day out, the constant loss of jobs, the continuous increase in the prices of everything especially food stuff and the general hardship being faced right now is enough reason to be depressed, or don’t you think so?

Going by the state of the nation currently, I think a greater percentage of the populace should be walking around depressed. However, this is not so and I feel the difference lies with how we as individuals handle the varying issues we face in life.

Depression is a state of mind so LET’S TALK ABOUT IT!!!

There are a few points to note about depression that I will quickly highlight.

  • Depression is an illness characterized by persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy, accompanied by an inability to carry out daily activities, for at least two weeks.
  • In addition, people with depression normally have several of the following: a loss of energy; a change in appetite; sleeping more or less; anxiety; reduced concentration; indecisiveness; restlessness; feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or hopelessness; and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.
  • Something that can happen to anybody.
  • Not a sign of weakness.
  • Treatable, with talking therapies or antidepressant medication or a combination of these.

What causes depression?

The causes of depression are not fully understood and may not be down to a single source. Depression is likely to be due to a complex combination of factors that include:

  • Genetics
  • Biological - changes in neurotransmitter levels
  • Environmental
  • Psychological and social/psychosocial

Some people are at higher risk of depression than others; risk factors include:

  • Life events - for example, bereavement, divorce, and poverty
  • Personality - less successful coping strategies, for instance
  • Genetic factors - first-degree relatives of depressed patients are at higher risk
  • Childhood trauma
  • Some prescription drugs - including corticosteroids, some beta-blockers, interferon, and reserpine
  • Abuse of recreational drugs (including alcohol and amphetamines) - can accompany depression or result in it. There are strong links between drug abuse and depression
  • A past head injury
  • People who have had an episode of major depression are at higher risk of a subsequent one
  • Chronic pain syndromes in particular, but also other chronic conditions, such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and cardiovascular disease

Common types of Depression

  • Major Depression

This type causes symptoms that may:

  • Begin suddenly, possibly triggered by a loss, crisis or stressful change
  • Interfere with normal functioning
  • Continue for months or years

It is possible for a person to have only one episode of major depression.  However, It is more common for episodes to be long lasting or to recur several times during a person’s life

  • Dysthymia

People with this illness may be consistently and mildly depressed for years. They function fairly well on a daily basis, but their relationships and self-esteem suffer over time.

  • Bipolar Disorder

People with this type of illness change back and forth between periods of depression and periods of mania (an extreme high, sometimes with agitation or irritability).

  • Symptoms of mania may include:
    • Less need for sleep
    • Overconfidence
    • Racing thoughts
    • Reckless behavior
    • Increased energy
    • Mood changes are often gradual, but can be sudden
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

This is depression that coincides with changes in the season.

Dealing with Depression

dep

“If you or someone you know has symptoms of depression…

Take Action!! ”

  • See a medical doctor for a complete checkup. Some medical problems, such as an under-functioning thyroid, can cause depression.
  • Go to the counseling center and talk with a professional counselor.
  • Talk things over with an understanding friend or  family  member
  • Don’t expect too much of yourself until your energy and mood improve
  • Take a break
  • Get some exercise
  • Avoid extra stress and big changes
  • Reduce or eliminate the use of alcohol or drugs
  • Eat a proper, well-balanced diet
  • Establish a regular sleep pattern

Remember, depression is a temporary difficulty, not a reflection of your whole life or self-worth.

PLEASE TALK ABOUT IT !!!

WRAPPED IN AN ODD PACKAGE

By our very nature as humans, we like to be appreciated. People are always elated and lit up when they are given gifts as some sort of appreciation either for doing a thing or accomplishing some feat. My last birthday was indeed memorable largely because of the tremendous gifts I received. In truth, I was actually looking forward to the gifts I would receive and from whom. The desire for gift as a form of appreciation never wanes with age or with the increasing wealth of a person. It is hardly surprising therefore that sometimes even when relatively insignificant items are given as gifts joy still flood through our systems upon receipt of them. One feature that has come to characterize gifts people receive and hence people quickly look to when in expectation of a gift is the brightly colored wrappings.

The story is told about a young man who was from a wealthy family and about to graduate. It was the culture in that affluent neighborhood for the parents to give the graduate an automobile. The young man and his father had spent months looking at cars, and the week before graduation they found the perfect car. The young man (Bill) was certain that the car would be his upon graduating. Imagine his disappointment when on the eve of his graduation the father handed over a gift-wrapped bible. The young man was angry and he threw the bible down and stormed out of the house never to return. It was the news of his father death that brought the boy home again.  As he sat one night going through his father’s possession that he was to inherit, he came across the bible his father had given him. He brushed away the dust, and opened it to find a cashier’s check dated to the day of his graduation in the exact amount of the car they had chosen.

He missed the gift all those years ago because it was not packaged in the traditional way. It was wrapped in an odd package (A bible).

The story is a true representation of life and the sometimes unpleasant experience that do not at first glance seem as much of a gift. How many times have we missed opportunities for learning and gaining value from things, experiences and people because they do not appear as our expectations. These sometimes unpleasant experiences that end up adding value to us and make us better people are what are referred to as subtle gifts. I must mention that these subtle gifts are not necessarily unpleasant experiences, but they may also be seeming insignificant happenings, things and even people that come into our lives.

In this write-up let me expose you to two special “Subtle gifts”.

THE GIFT OF FRIENDS

I saw a very interesting quote a long time ago that did a mindset shift for me on the meaning of friendship. The quote goes thus: Do not walk behind me, I may not lead. Do not walk in front of me, I may not follow. Walk besides me and be my friend. This quote taught more than any classroom could the true meaning of friendship as a partnership, one that creates value for both parties.

Many do not really know the importance of the word friends and the tremendous gifts they are. The people in our lives that we call friends are gifts of immeasurable proportions that many people seek; but often times are taken advantage of by those who have it in abundance or those who do not understand what it is.

By nature, humans are social beings; having the tendency to agglomerate. This basically means we have a deep seated need to affiliate with other humans. It is in view of this that the worse punishment you can give to a criminal in detention is SOLITARY CONFINEMENT. When this need for affiliation is not met, we feel incomplete and discomfited. Have you ever been lonely? Needing somebody to share your thoughts with and not finding any? It is at that point you realize what a wonderful gift we often take for granted in friendship. If you have loving friends that surround you, that you share your every joy and sadness with, your sunny days and your glooms, you are lucky; they are God’s precious gifts to you. It has been documented that people are more prone to dying when they are alone and do not have friends. According to Richard Lang, Chair of preventive medicine at the Cleveland clinic in Ohio, we have to attend to loneliness and social isolation in the same way we do with our diet, exercise and how much sleep we get. This is because chronic loneliness poses a serious health risk (www.everydayhealth.com).

Let me give you a simple assignment…

For a week, keep to yourself and don’t interact with anybody, stay with your thoughts only. At the end of that week do a check on your Blood Pressure and you would treat your friends well.

The gift of “A DAY”

Let me draw your minds to the beautiful gift of A DAY. Someone captured it perfectly when he said today is a gift and that is why it is often called the “present”, how so true. Today is actually the only day we have to do whatever we have to do, we are often not certain of another. Every day you wake up into, is a tremendous gift. A day should not only be looked at as a 24 hours’ time frame, but an opportunity to accomplish something. The people who died yesterday would wish to have one more day to right all their wrongs and leave their footprints in the sands of time. Every day is precious and should be used as such. Take advantage of every second, minute and hour in every day because we only have one chance at it, when it is gone, it is gone forever.

One of my best songs ever was the one sung by popular American R & B star R.Kelly titled “if I could turn back the hands of time”. His regret as captured by the song was his inability to take advantage of the time he had to make things right in his life. Time is fleeting, and hence must be cherished. The only guarantee we have is the time at our disposal. Every new day is a gift, what are you doing with it? Jack London; American, writer, novelist and social activist has this to say: “The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.”  It is in dying moments when the twilight of our lives have come that people start appreciating the gift that is called “A day”

Live each day as though it is the last, because when it is gone, it is gone forever. Yesterday is not yours for it is gone, tomorrow is uncertain for it may never come. Today is the only day your truly actually have, use it.

I do not qualify to tell you how to use your day, but I personally recommend that every day should be spent touching lives and enriching the world around us. At the end of the day what you get out of life is what you give into it.

Let me close this piece with a quote from Steve Jobs the founder of Apples, he said “For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something”.

What are you doing with today, the precious gift called “A day”.

Keep Safe & Work Well - Cammilus Elemuwa

44584259-work-safety-word-cloud-concept-angled-with-great-terms-such-as-security-employee-company-and-moreThe importance of Safety and Health management is a major consideration for a successful work place. Safety has overall implication on the image and growth of an organization, hence every responsible firm considers health & safety as a top priority in its budgeting, policy formation, analysis and execution. This explains why despite the recession in the economy with many companies facing budget constraints and cuts, we try to ensure that health and safety programmes do not trail behind in the scheme of things.

We must realize that a safe and healthy workforce is valuable asset for any organization. It is only when people are safe and healthy that jobs are properly executed.

It is important that employees stay in tune with latest safety strategies through inquisitive disposition to know and adhere to simple rules so as to avoid swelling up statistical ratios that are available on accident and fatality especially in the oil and gas and related industries. It becomes more worrisome if one falls into avoidable accidents, through ignorance or negligence. There are staggering records both locally and internationally on the rate of accident and consequences owing to lack of observance to safety rules. For example, the United States Occupational and Health Administration in one of its reports made it clear that the total fatality in the oil and gas is seven times greater than the rate for all United State Industry. This is really mindboggling as one begin to imagine what the figure would be in Nigeria that is still grappling with infrastructure to cope with the necessary health and safety challenges posed by the peculiarity of the business environment of the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry.

Strict adherence to safety measures by staff has so much long and short term benefits. The huge consequences of accidents are not limited to the victim but extends to the organization and family members who bear the brunt of such mishaps. While the family members reels in the pains of nursing  wounded loved one, in a minor situation, or deep sense of loss in extreme case of death, the company also count its losses in terms of absence from work by the victim and possible payment of fines and litigation fees.  Every responsible organization will certainty feel the pains of a dead or wounded effective and proactive staff.

I am pressed to briefly discuss for a while a common possible accident every one of us is prone to; Road crashes.  Whether we drive to work, drive for work or for pleasure, a neglect of simple driving safety rules can result to accident that can drastically affect the physical ability of victims if they survive road crashes, hence it is imperative to adhere to safe driving rules. The joy of returning to loved ones at home after the close of work is heartwarming, we must therefore individually make conscious efforts to keep away from avoidable dangers, especially road crashes.

Reports have it that road crashes are among the highest causes of death with monumental loss on the victim and other stakeholders.  I read in one report that the loss of wages for crash victim in the US in 2000 was about $61 billion.  This figure is really huge and can be avoided through adherence to operational safety net mechanism set by some organization and other relevant agencies. The fall-out from adhering to safety rules if adequately followed is a win-win situation for parties involved.  Simple rules such as, do not make calls while driving, do not drive above speed limit, use your sit-belt and so on are ways of employing safe driving skills on and off the  job. It is only when we keep safe that our job will be a job well done.

Safety is cost-saving

IMAG7446

I read somewhere a safety quote that goes thus “If Safety is expensive, try accident” and it got me thinking long and hard about the expenditures we have made into our safety agenda over the last years. One of the major pre-occupations of managing an establishment is to take a critical look at the different areas that resources are expended on, and where cost needs to be cut back. The truth is, if there is any area that spending has been adequately justified for us, it is in the area of safety. The return on investment for us is evident in the 10 LTI-free years we have recorded in all our operations, which for us is massive. Nothing gives us more joy than finishing every year with all our personnel going home to meet their loved ones. The value of that can only be truly appreciated when you have gone through the heavily emotional process of having to go to a family to tell a young wife and kids that their father will not be coming home anymore because he died working for you. It is an excruciating experience that thankfully we have not had to go through and one that gives us the impetus to continue to make investments into the safety of our personnel.

One must always understand that the cost of accident is massive. Direct costs including workers' compensation payments, medical safety pixexpenses, and costs for legal services plus the indirect cost of accident investigation and implementation of corrective measures, lost productivity, repairs of damaged equipment and property are huge expenditures that we are not willing to make, hence we will continue to invest in safety. As a matter of fact nothing deals a company a more massive blow than a damaged reputation that takes so much hard work to build. The negative publicity that trails accident investigation and possible court cases creates a drain pipe for company’s finances and negatively impacts the bottom line.

Personally, I am appreciative of the HSE team that has not failed to nudge us in the direction of Safe Systems of Work. The HSE theme that was chosen for 2017 “Safety… Every time” aptly characterize the mentality that we are determined on making a necessary part of our operation. We will continue on this path and end the year strong with every one working for and with us going back to their family safe.

Nigeria’s Crude oil production hits 2.1mpd

Posted By: Breaking Times on: March 01, 2017 In: Breaking News, Nation, News, Nigeria

Nigeria’s crude oil production has risen to 2.1 million barrels per day from an average production level of 1.8 million per day last year, the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru has revealed.Attacks on oil pipelines and other production facilities in the Niger Delta region by militant youths had curbed Nigeria’s production in 2016 and placed government revenue and the economy in danger.

But speaking yesterday at the ongoing Nigeria Oil and Gas conference in Abuja, Baru explained the repairs on the facilities and the peaceful situation in the region have resulted in a rise in oil productions. He was therefore optimistic that before the end of the year, oil output will exceed the 2.2 million barrels per day target of the 2017 budget. He said: “Crude production declined to as low as 1.5 million barrels per day in July 2016, but this has steadily increased to 2.1 million barrels in recent times due to strategic steps taken by the NNPC and her partners to be able to produce from assets that were affected by pipeline vandalism.

“We must also mention that improvement in production is also as a result of successes of recent dialogue held the federal government in the Niger Delta areas. We are hoping that by the end of Q2, 2017, we should ramp up production above the budget benchmark of 2.2 million barrels per day”.While noting that NNPC continues to face a lot of challenges in its operations, he stated that the non-passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill has impacted negatively on its fiscal plans.

According to him, “The sectoral fiscal regime was also constrained with the non-passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill which is before the National Assembly. All these have subjected NNPC to seek sharpen commercial strategies to enable her mitigate some of the aforementioned challenges which would ultimately move NNPC from the era of loses into profitable operation, and thereby within the expectations of all stakeholders.
